Kino - raw1394 kernel module not loaded or failure to read/write /dev/raw1394! error

I tried using Kino and Cinelerra to capture video from my Panasonic DV camcorder in my Ubuntu 8.04, but none of those softwares detected my camcorder. I tried both firewire and USB. Kino was giving me «WARNING: raw1394 kernel module not loaded or failure to read/write /dev/raw1394!» error. I couldn't find out how to load raw1394 kernel module, so I tried changing the permission to 660 for /dev/raw1394. That didn't help. I finally got it to work after I changed the permission to 777.

Skype video worked in Ubuntu 7.10 Gutsy Gibbon

As you might have read, Skype released a beta version with Video support for Linux. I downloaded the Ubuntu Feisty Fawn package and it installed without any problem in Ubuntu 7.10 Gutsy Gibbon. I didn't try video chatting with anybody. I just checked to see if Skype recognized the webcam and it did. The clarity looks better in the small window than AMSN, but I'll have to chat with someone and check. I'll do that soon.

Laptop webcam works with AMSN in Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon

I did a fresh install of Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon Tribe 3 on my laptop on Saturday. It has ATI Mobility Radeon X1600 graphics card. I had problem with the Live CD as usual. The X server didn't work. I had to use the safe graphics mode in Live CD to get it to work. I then installed Ubuntu from the Live CD. The installation went fine, but Ubuntu didn't install the proprietary driver for ATI card by default. I had to manually install and reconfigure my xserver. ATI support really sucks in Linux. Gutsy is slightly buggy, but it didn't prevent me from doing the regular work.
