My dad and FIL use Ubuntu
September 16th, 2008 by ArunI’m happy to say that my dad and my father-in-law use Ubuntu as their main OS. My FIL used Ubuntu when he stayed with us and liked it, so he asked me to install Ubuntu in the new Dell Inspiron laptop he got. He logs into Windows for tasks that can’t be performed in Ubuntu or not straightforward.
The Windows installation in my dad’s computer crashed twice in the last couple of months, so he wanted to try Ubuntu. I guided him through phone to install Ubuntu. He felt the installation was quite easy. I then guided him on adding repositories and installing softwares. He installed all the necessary codecs and applications. CD/DVD, MP3 etc. worked flawlessly. He did this couple of days back. He told me yesterday that he liked it very much. He felt that it was faster than Windows and sound etc were much better than Windows. I told him to try it for a month and give me the feedback. Unlike my FIL’s computer which is a dual boot, my dad’s laptop has just Ubuntu. This is just an example of how Ubuntu (and other Linux distributions) are becoming more user friendly (for non tech people). I won’t say Ubuntu is 100% user friendly due to lack of manufacturers support for hardwares, but it is getting better day by day.
