KDE 4.0 expected to be released tomorrow
As per the release schedule of the KDE team, KDE 4.0 is expected to be released tomorrow. I'm not sure how many of the bugs that were outstanding as of RC2 were fixed by the KDE team. I hope they release a really stable version that includes fixes for minor UI bugs like missing icons for lot of menu entries, System settings not starting, root password not working etc. I'm eagerly waiting for the final release of KDE 4.0. I soon might replace my desktop Ubuntu OS with Kubuntu, after 8.04 is released and keep Ubuntu in my laptop. Kudos to the KDE team for their effort on developing KDE 4.0.
KDE 4 - couple of annoying issues
I'm using KDE 4.0 RC2 intermittently now. You might have read my reviews here and here. It's still not ready for everyday use. System settings is not working with KDE 4.0 RC2. When you click on System Settings, you get the icon in the taskbar with opening message, stays there for several seconds and then disappears without starting (similar to KDE 3.x problem and the reason, applications not starting, why I stopped using KDE). System Setting was working fine initially with RC2, but it doesn't wok any more.
KDE 4.0 RC2 much better, but still not perfect
You might have read my personal experience with KDE 4.0 RC1 3 weeks back. I installed RC2 in my Kubuntu system and used it intermittently for the past 2 weeks. The installation was simple as explained here. RC2 was much better than RC1, though it was not perfect. There were few bugs that popped out during that time.
Kubuntu 8.04 to include KDE 4.0
Jonathan Riddell announced in Kubuntu mailing list that Kubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron will include KDE 4.0. Since 8.04 is supposed to be a LTS (Long term support) release, users will have an option of selecting either KDE 3.5.x or KDE 4.0. KDE 3.5.x will have the outstanding bugs fixed in order to release Kubuntu 8.04 as LTS release. KDE 4.0 option will give developers and other Kubuntu users to use the latest KDE version for testing/enjoyment. It's a good move by Kubuntu team.
KDE 4.0 RC1 too buggy for me
I installed KDE 4.0 RC1 in my Kubuntu 7.10 installation as per the instructions here. It was quite buggy. Here is a small list of problem I found in the couple of days I used it. I don't know if those were fixed in KDE 4.0 RC2 which was released 2 days ago.
