Virtualbox 3.0 released

Sun has released Virtualbox 3.0 yesterday. Virtualbox 3.0 brings one of the fixes I have been waiting for. It fixed the USB webcam problem. I haven’t tried it to see if it’s working. I would give that a try tonight. Here are some of the major fixes in Virtualbox 3.0, mostly related to Linux.

  • Support for OpenGL 2.0 for Windows, Linux and Solaris guests
  • Linux hosts: kernel module compile fixes for 2.6.31
  • fixed 64 bits CentOS guest hangs during early boot
  • GUI: added mini toolbar for fullscreen and seamless mode
  • GUI: redesigned settings dialogs
  • GUI: allow to create/remove more than one host-only network adapters
  • 3D support: fixed VM crashes for client applications using incorrect OpenGL states
  • support Windows 7 RDP client
  • Networking: fixed another problem with TX checksum offloading with Linux kernels up to version 2.6.18
  • VBoxManage: fixed incorrect partition table processing when creating VMDK files giving raw partition access
  • VBoxManage: support cloning to existing image file
  • Shared Folders: sometimes a file was created using the wrong permissions
  • Shared Folders: allow to change file attributes from Linux guests and use the correct file mode when creating files
  • Shared Folders: some content was incorrectly written under certain conditions
  • Shared Folders: fixed incorrect file timestamps, when using Windows guest on a Linux host
  • X11 clipboard: fix duplicate end of lines
  • X11 guests: a number of shared clipboard fixes
  • Linux guests: Guest Additions support for SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 11
  • Linux guests: new daemon vboxadd-service to handle time synchronization and guest property lookup
  • Linux guests: implemented guest properties (OS info, logged in users, basic network information)
  • USB: Support for high-speed isochronous endpoints has been added. In addition, read-ahead buffering is performed for input endpoints (currently Linux hosts only). This should allow additional devices to work, notably webcams.
  • USB: fixed error handling for some USB dongles

For more information on fixes, refer to changelog.

Myka – Linux based home theater PC

Posted 01 Jul 2009 — by Arun
Category Linux, Technology

Myka is an all in one Linux based home theater PC. The good news about Myka is, it’s developed in an open platform. There is no closed source or proprietary software involved. Unlike Apple TV, which delivers only 720p high def contents and costs $229 for 40GB and $329 for 160GB, Myka costs $299 for 1 Terabyte storage and support 1080p high def videos. You can buy with wireless N support if you pay $40 more.

Since it’s based on open source software, you don’t have to use any proprietary software like iTunes. It supports more audio and video formats than Apple TV. Here are some of the features of Myka:

  • Built in BitTorrent support.
  • Wireless support.
  • Internet Access.
  • Includes a UPnP AV Server, myiHome Server, an FTP Server, Samba Server, NFS Server, its Torrent Client, and a Usenet Client
  • You can access Myka from anywhere with internet connection.
  • Can stream videos and photos from sites like Youtube, Flickr, Picasa etc.
  • 1080p support

I haven’t used the device yet. The price and the configurations are tempting. I might buy one soon (will wait for some more reviews). If you want to see the review of Myka, check BetaNews.

Google Voice and video coming to Linux soon

According to juberjabber (last paragraph), Google had to rewrite a key piece of the technology which took some time to get Google video and voice chat to Linux users. I hope it’s on it’s way.

Thanks to Pin Stack for the news.
