Microsoft sues TomTom over Linux patent claims

Category News

According to TechFlash

Microsoft filed suit against TomTom, alleging that the in-car navigation company’s devices violate eight of its patents — including three that relate to TomTom’s implementation of the Linux kernel.

Asked if this TomTom case is the start of a broader legal campaign over those alleged violations, Gutierrez , Microsoft corporate vice president, said no.

“Microsoft respects and appreciates the important role that open-source software plays in our industry and we respect and appreciate the passion and the great contribution that open-source developers make in our industry,” Gutierrez said. He said that respect and appreciation is “not inconsistent with our respect for intellectual-property rights.”

I don’t follow this. Does that mean they won’t sue the open source community for patent violation, but they will sue anyone who uses the product from open source community?

TG Daily reports

Marvell announced today a new type of computer, which is the size of an AC to DC converting wall outlet plug with 1.2 GHz processor, 512 MB RAM, 512 MB Flash, Ethernet and USB support. It runs small versions of Linux, consumes about 5 watts max while allowing remote users to access data stored on the device from remote locations including local intranets or over the Internet.

The device is called the SheevaPlug. The SheevaPlug plugs directly into a wall outlet and is wholly comprised within the wall outlet’s plug and housing. From there, a Gigabit Ethernet cable is run from the Plug to a router, allowing data reaching its IP address to be responded to. It’s important to note that since this is a Linux-based machine capable of running Debian-based distributions, for example, such as Ubuntu, Fedora, etc., it can run any service.

Marvell is targeting an eventual $49 price tag for the device, with a $99 developer version.

That’s cool. If the reviews are good, I might buy one.

One third of netbooks that Dell sold run Linux

Laptop Magazine reports

One third of the netbooks that Dell sold run Ubuntu. Also, Dell is seeing low return rates on those Linux netbooks, which is a good news. According to Dell, the the return rate of Ubuntu running Mini 9s are comparable to the XP rate. Beyond educating customers before they make a purchase, the success of Dell’s Ubuntu offering may also be attributed to the easy to use graphical user interface that they have created which makes it easier to launch popular programs and Web tools.

I hope Netbook will help people to come out of the Windows mind set and start exploring other options.
