Ubuntu team has released their 5th (and I think final) alpha version of Ubuntu 8.10. Alpha 5 brings the following changes:
- GNOME 2.23.91
- Nautilus file manager now has tab support and eject icon for removable drives.
- File Roller now supports ALZ, RZIP, CAB, TAR.7Z file types also.
- Linux Kernel 2.6.27 which includes better hardware support.
- The User Switcher panel applet (package fast-user-switch-applet) now provides an extra entry for starting a Guest session.
- On each successful boot, Intrepid will retain a copy of your running kernel and make it available from the boot loader as a “Last successful boot” option.
- DKMS is included in Alpha 5, allowing kernel drivers to be automatically rebuilt when new kernels are released. This makes it possible for kernel package updates to be made available immediately without waiting for rebuilds of driver packages, and without third-party driver packages becoming out of date when installing these kernel updates.
Here are some known issues that exists in Alpha 5.
- When using manual partitioning and configuring crypt+LVM, the partitioning will fail in certain configurations.
- The Intrepid 2.6.27-2 kernel fails to boot as a Guest under VirtualBox. This issue is expected to be resolved for Intrepid Alpha 6.
- Resume from Suspend with the 2.6.27-1 and 2.6.27-2 kernel will cause the system to reboot/shutdown. This issue should be resolved with the 2.6.27-3 kernel which will be uploaded post Alpha5.
- On Ubuntu systems, the “Shutdown” button in the Quit…menu does not shut down the system, but instead logs the user out.
- On Ubuntu systems, the default desktop theme is wrong.
- The X.Org configuration file (/etc/X11/xorg.conf) still has InputDevice entries for the mouse and keyboard, but they are ignored now because input-hotplug is used.
- After upgrading to this version, some keys might misbehave in X. Please make sure you have set the keyboard model as Generic Evdev-managed keyboard in System ? Preferences ? Keyboard, in
the tab Layouts. - Memtest86+, accessible via the boot menu, falsely reports some memory as failing the test.
Kubuntu team has released Kubuntu 8.10 Alpha 5 which includes:
- Intrepid Ibex alpha 5 brings with it KDE 4.1.1.
- Intrepid Ibex alpha5 comes with an all-new KDE4 version of the Adept Package manager. It features a new, re-factored user interface and is much more stable, responsive, while at the same time being lighter on resources than Adept 2.1.
- The all new update-notifier-kde serves as an update-notifier and an apport crash notifier for Intrepid Ibex. The current release also supports notification for the need of a reboot as well as upgrade hooks.
- KWin’s nifty desktop effects will work by default in Kubuntu Intrepid Ibex as long as your card is supported and you have mesa-utils installed.
- In Intrepid Ibex alpha5, KMix now supports the multimedia-button functionality that various keyboards offer.

I’m not sure. I installed alpha 5 and ran into lot of other issues since I had both Ubuntu and Kubuntu installed in the same machine, so I couldn’t check on this one.
“The X.Org configuration file (/etc/X11/xorg.conf) still has InputDevice entries for the mouse and keyboard, but they are ignored now because input-hotplug is used.”
Is there a solution to still have a custom configuration for the mouse?
