Linux is finally making inroads into desktop market in India. Linux already has over 20% market share in the server market in India and has just around 5% in the desktop segment. That is changing now. Here are some of the major projects that are going on or completed recently:
- Electronics Corporation of Tamil Nadu is installing Suse Linux in around 40,000 desktops in the entire state.
- LIC of India installed 60,000 desktops with RedHat Linux.
- Canara Bank too has around 10,000 Linux OS desktops.
Linux, according to Umashakar, has helped ELCOT (Electronics Corporation of Tamil Nadu) “reduce general hardware costs by nearly 25 per cent. In the case of high-end servers, the savings could be as much as 80 per cent.”
Most of the desktops using Windows in India are pirated and since Microsoft began cracking on piracy, more people are moving towards Linux.
