Laptop webcam works with AMSN in Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon

Posted 30 Jul 2007 — by Arun
Category Ubuntu

I did a fresh install of Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon Tribe 3 on my laptop on Saturday. It has ATI Mobility Radeon X1600 graphics card. I had problem with the Live CD as usual. The X server didn’t work. I had to use the safe graphics mode in Live CD to get it to work. I then installed Ubuntu from the Live CD. The installation went fine, but Ubuntu didn’t install the proprietary driver for ATI card by default. I had to manually install and reconfigure my xserver. ATI support really sucks in Linux. Gutsy is slightly buggy, but it didn’t prevent me from doing the regular work.

The good news is, AMSN detected my built in webcam automatically and the video chat worked fine. AMSN in Ubuntu Feisty Fawn didn’t detect the built in webcam in my laptop. It did detect the external webcam in my desktop. I’m not sure if the fix was in AMSN or Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon. The video chat with my parents worked fine.

The audio doesn’t work by default in AMSN. To get the audio setup appear in the preferences, you have to install the package libsnack2. Open a terminal and type
sudo apt-get install libsnack2

Once done, Open the preference box in AMSN, go to Others tab and you’ll see the video setup option at the bottom. The setup will guide you through audio and video tuning similar to audio and video tuning wizard in MSN. I couldn’t get my built in mic to work with Skype or AMSN in Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon. It was working fine in Feisty. The new beta version of Skype offers 6 options under the mic setting and I’m not sure which one to select. The default one is not working.

The UI of AMSN also underwent a change in Gutsy. I’m not sure if they changed the default theme, but it looks good to the eyes now. It’s much more fancier and neat. Once I get the mic to work, I’m all set.

Thunderbird future – As a separate organization?

Posted 26 Jul 2007 — by Arun
Category News

The CEO of Mozilla, Mitchell Baker has written in her blog about the future of Thunderbird (Check the blog of Scott too). We all knew that Mozilla neglected Thunderbird for a long time and the updates were slow to come. Mozilla is now thinking of spinning Thunderbird as a new non profit organization or a subsidiary of Mozilla or as a community project much like SeaMonkey is.

She has written about the positives and negatives of each option. Everyone in Mozilla and Thunderbird (and ofcourse the users) feel that Thunderbird didn’t get enough attention since everyone’s concentration and effort were directed towards Firefox (and more in it’s fight against IE?).

It’s high time they make a right decision. The future of Thunderbird is not very bright due to web based emails like GMail (for regular users) and big companies still sticking with Outlook (Microsoft Exchange) and ofcourse Mozilla putting less effort in marketing Thunderbird. Thunderbird needs to innovate better and get the changes out faster in order to stay competitive. I hope they make a wise decision and keep this nice product alive.

Digg in deal with Microsoft

Posted 25 Jul 2007 — by Arun
Category News

Digg sucks!!! Digg has entered an agreement with Microsoft that allows Microsoft to be the exclusive provider of display
and contextual advertising on Digg.com

The three-year agreement between Microsoft and Digg, provides a boost to
the world’s largest software maker’s efforts to gain a foothold
in the rapidly growing online advertising market.

Microsoft has a similar advertising agreement with social-networking site Facebook.com. I didn’t know that before. Hmmm.

PC Industry disappointed with Vista

Acer president Gianfranco Lanci openly attacked Microsoft over the Windows Vista operating(?) system. Lanci said the operating system was riddled with problems and gave users and businesses no reason to buy a new PC.

“The whole industry is disappointed with Windows Vista,” Lanci said.Despite the long wait between Windows XP and Vista, the latest operating system still lacks maturity, he said. “Stability is certainly a problem,” he said.

I hope other PC makers will also show their guts by coming out against Microsoft’s bloated OS and start offering alternate OSes.

I was reading an article in PC World about the security hole in Fox News’s website, when this line struck me.

The Fox News site runs on the Apache Web server software on Ubuntu Linux.

It’s interesting to know that Fox uses Ubuntu Linux.
