Drag and drop routes in Google Map

Posted 29 Jun 2007 — by Arun
Category Technology

Google has implemented (a new feature) one of the features I badly wanted from the mapping services, drag and drop the route to get a different route than the default one. Click on the pictures below to see the difference. The first picture showed the route from Chicago to Washington D.C via South Bend, Toledo, Akron etc. I wanted to go via Columbus, OH, so I dragged the point near Toledo to Fort Wayne to create the new route and Google immediately recalculated the distance. It’s a wonderful feature which I wanted often when I drive long distance.

(K)Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon Tribe 2 released

Posted 28 Jun 2007 — by Arun
Category Ubuntu

Ubuntu has released the second alpha version of it’s next OS, Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon Tribe 2. Here is the list of features:

Gnash – Free flash player
XDG-user-directories – Creates a standard set of default directories in your home folder that users and applications can utilize to make user experience more consistent and convenient across sessions, and avoid file cluttering.
Firefox 3 Alpha.
Compiz Fusion – Compiz Fusion is enabled by default and will bring 3D desktop visual effects that improve the usability and visual appeal of the system. The Gutsy Gibbon automatically detects whether the hardware is capable of running compiz; if not, it falls back to the “metacity” window manager. Additional effects can be enabled in “System/Preferences/Apperance” under the “Desktop Effects” tab.
restricted-manager – restricted-manager can now handle drivers which are free in themselves but which require non-free firmware. In particular, it can now fetch and install firmware for the bcm43xx driver (for Broadcom wireless
cards) – with just three clicks by the user.
Crash reporting Apport has been re-enabled by default for this Tribe, so that crashes will again be reported and (if the user agrees) sent to the bug tracking system.

Download Ubuntu Tribe 2 from here.

Here is the list of features in Kubuntu Tribe 2:
Amarok 1.4.6.
KOffice 1.6.3.
KNetworkManager 0.2.
GDebi KDE 0.3 – Kubuntu now has its very own application that allows you to simply install a downloaded (local) package without using the command line. So, if you go to a website that is offering a .deb package for an application you are interested, you will now be offered the option of not only saving it to the disc, but also opening it with the Gdebi
Package Installer.
Kubuntu Restricted Extras 5 – for multimedia playback.

Download Kubuntu Tribe 2 from here.

Google Desktop for Linux released

Posted 28 Jun 2007 — by Arun
Category Announcement

Good News!!! Google has released Google Desktop for Linux. Here is the list of features in Google Desktop for Linux:

Quick Search Box – Type a few letters or words into the search box and your top results pop up instantly. You can call up the Quick Search Box by pressing the Ctrl key twice, and hide it by pressing Ctrl twice again.

Search Your Gmail and Web History – Google Desktop helps you find what you’re looking for by searching your Gmail and web history along with your hard drive. And because your index is stored locally on your own computer, you can even access your Gmail and web history while you’re offline.

Google Desktop automatically indexes and allows you to search the full text of virtually all your files, including the following types:

  • Gmail
  • Text files and source code
  • PDF and PS files
  • HTML files
  • Email from Thunderbird
  • OpenOffice.org documents
  • Image and music files
  • Man pages and Info pages
  • File and folder names

Smart Indexing – After you install Google Desktop, it starts indexing the files that are already on your computer.

Google Integration – Integration with Google web search.

File Versioning – Google Desktop creates cached copies (snapshots) of your files and other items each time they have been changed, and stores these copies on your computer’s hard drive. As a result, you can often use Desktop to find previous versions of your files or ones you’ve accidentally deleted.

Windows Live Folder Beta open

Posted 27 Jun 2007 — by Arun
Category Technology

Microsoft has opened the Windows Live Folder (beta) to public with Windows Live ID. I registered using my hotmail login and got a taste of it. You get a paltry 500 MB of storage to store documents, music and photos. The interface is neat and simple. When you login, you can see options to personal folders, shared folders and public folders. (Picture below).

winlivefolder2.JPG

By default, your uploads are personal. You can keep them as personal or you can share with your friends or you can make them available for public.

I uploaded few photos under Pictures folder. Once uploaded (took some time for 4 photos), you get the same thumbnail images for all photos (see the picture below).

winlivefolder1.JPG

It won’t show the thumbnails of the photos. If you click on the thumbnail, it’ll show you the same default picture in a slightly bigger format with options to download, rename or delete. It won’t show the real picture. I hope they change that before the final release. (picture below).

I didn’t get time to research much and there’s not a whole lot of options to research. Give it a try.

Google Apps gets mail integration and new features

Posted 26 Jun 2007 — by Arun
Category Technology

Google announced yesterday that they are adding mail migration feature to Google Apps Premier and Education Editions. Administrators can use a self-service wizard to easily and securely transfer existing email data from an IMAP server over to users’ Gmail accounts on Google Apps. Gmail will put messages into conversation threads, display the original sender, recipient, and date of messages, and convert existing mail folders into labels. Old messages are instantly searchable with Gmail’s search. This tool currently supports email servers with an IMAP interface.

Here are the list of other features that are either added or going to be added soon:

  • Shared address book – Users who want to add colleagues to a new email or document no longer have to go to a
separate list or company directory. Users can search through all the users on a domain by clicking the “Choose from contacts” link.
  • Google Docs & Spreadsheets charts – Number-crunchers will be happy to see that Google has included the ability to create charts in a spreadsheet.
  • Increased Gmail attachment size - Google made it easier to share more of those large presentations and
files as attachments by doubling the allowable attachment size to 20 MB to make Gmail space even more useful.
  • Multi-user chats - Now users can invite multiple contacts into the same chat on the Google Talk gadget from their Start Page. This will be useful for small groups working on a document or other project together.
  • Google Docs & Spreadsheets refresh - Soon Google will complete a visual overhaul of Docs & Spreadsheets that
will make it much easier for users with dozens or even hundreds of documents to search, locate, and organize their documents.
